The Price of Envy

Classes: 6th to 8th classes

English:

        The Price of Envy

There was once a jealous neighbour who was envious of Tenali Ramakrishna's fame and wit. This neighbour spread false rumors about Tenali, hoping to tarnish his reputation. When Tenali heard about this, he decided to teach the neighbour a lesson in a subtle way.

Tenali invited the neighbour over for dinner. During the meal, Tenali placed a mirror in front of the neighbour and asked, "What do you see?" The neighbour replied, "I see myself."Tenali then said, "Exactly. You see yourself because a mirror reflects what is in front of it. Similarly, the rumors you spread about me reflect more about your own character than mine.

If you speak ill of others, it only shows the negativity within you."The neighbour realized his mistake, apologized to Tenali, and promised to mend his ways.

 Moral:

Spreading falsehoods and envy can harm others and oneself. It is better to speak kindly and truthfully.
