Frustration

FRUSTRATION

 Human adjustment is a never ending process. Psychological and social needs are creating more frustration in the human beings than they were in earlier times.

     " Frustration means a feeling of annoyance, disappointment or anger when something you want to do or achieve is blocked or doesnot go as expected."

    Let's know the causes of Frustration.

   * Environment Frustrations:

         Our environment is filled with obstacles. The weather in seasons, the extreme heat, the extreme cold, continuous rains, floods etc cause frustration to the organisms. Natural calamities like earthquakes, famines, noise pollution,and traffic jam etc cause frustration.

  *Personal Frustration:

    When the goal of individual is blocked due to personal limitations one experiences frustration.
Not perfect in entrance exam, Inferiority feelings, Unrealistic expectations, continuous failures etc causes Frustration.

    * Social Frustrations:

      Frustration occurs due to societal Expectations, formal laws, Social conventions, Descriminations, Prejudice, Injustice etc lead to social frustration.

* Conflicts :

   Approach - Approach, Approach Avoidance conflicts etc also cause frustration in the individuals.

   When the conflicts are not resolved properly then the individuals land in frustration.

   Reactions to Frustration

      It can be classified into 3 types

      * Aggressive reactions

      * Withdrawl reactions

      Compromise reactions

    REACTIONS TO FRUSTRATION
Frustration leads to different types of reactions. These are mainly:
1. Aggressive Reactions
When a person is blocked from reaching a goal, they may show anger or aggression.
Aggression means hurting or trying to hurt others.
It may be:
Direct → attacking the real cause
Indirect (Displacement) → attacking a safer or weaker person
Displacement
Anger is shifted from the real source to another person/object.
Example: A worker scolded by his boss may show anger on his children.
2. Withdrawal Reactions
The person avoids or escapes from the frustrating situation.
It is mainly a fear reaction.
Forms of Withdrawal:
Repression → forgetting painful thoughts
Fantasy → imagining success instead of real action
Regression → behaving like a child
Nomadism / Isolation → avoiding people or situations
3. Compromise Reactions
When neither aggression nor withdrawal works, a person tries adjustment.
They partly give up goals but continue in a modified way.
Examples:
A student not getting a medical seat may choose another related field.
EGO DEFENCE MECHANISMS
These are unconscious ways to reduce frustration.
Examples:
Rationalization
Compensation
Sublimation
FRUSTRATION TOLERANCE
It means the ability to handle frustration.
Low tolerance → person gets upset easily
EFFECTS OF FRUSTRATION
May lead to:
Anger
Stress
Poor adjustment
In extreme cases, it may cause serious mental distress.

 Conclusion :

   Frustration is not a stop sign; it is a signal to pause, think, and move forward in a better way.
Frustration is a natural part of life that everyone experiences when things don’t go as expected. It is not the frustration itself that matters, but how we respond to it. Negative reactions like aggression or withdrawal may give temporary relief, but they do not solve the problem. Choosing positive responses like compromise, patience, and trying new approaches helps us grow stronger and wiser.
