Treatment of Mental Disorders

PSYCHOTHERAPY is treating mental disorders, in which trained professionals use psychological techniques to help overcome the mental disorders.
  * A trained person who practices psychological treatment is called a psychotherapist.
   * Psychotherapist helps the individuals with psychological difficulties to overcome them resolve the problems in life and bring-out personal growth.
 Psychotherapy is of many types.

     *Psychoanalytical Therapy
    *Behavioural Therapy 
     * Cognitive Therapy 
     *Humanistic Therapy 
     *Group Therapy

   

   Psychoanalytical Therapy

    * Focuses on uncovering unconscious thoughts and past experiences affecting behaviour.
Uses techniques like free association and dream analysis to bring hidden feelings to awareness.
   

1) Free Association

   Client speaks freely whatever comes to mind without filtering thoughts.

Helps reveal unconscious conflicts and emotions.

2) Dream Interpretation

    Dreams are analyzed to understand hidden desires and fears.

They provide clues about the unconscious mind.
3) Stage of Resistance

   Client may avoid certain topics or feel uncomfortable.

This shows important hidden conflicts that need attention.
4) Transference

  Client transfers feelings about others onto the therapist
  Helps in understanding past relationships and emotions.

  B) Behavioural Therapy
Focuses on changing unhealthy behaviours through learning principles.
Uses conditioning techniques to replace negative behaviours with positive ones.
  1) Aversive Therapy
Unwanted behaviour is paired with unpleasant stimuli.
This reduces the tendency to repeat that behaviour.
2) Systematic Desensitization
Gradual exposure to fear along with relaxation techniques.
Helps reduce anxiety and phobias step by step.

3) Operant Techniques

   Uses rewards and punishments to modify behaviour.

Positive reinforcement strengthens desired actions.

    C) Cognitive Therapy

Focuses on changing negative and irrational thinking patterns.

   Helps individuals develop healthier thoughts and beliefs

D) Humanistic Therapy

  Emphasizes personal growth, self-awareness, and self-acceptance

   Encourages individuals to reach their full potential.


E) Group Therapy
Involves therapy sessions with multiple individuals together.
Provides support, shared experiences, and social learning.
